Alex's Bio

 

I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012 with a B.S. in Human Physiology, where I was also heavily involved in running the Triathlon and Cycling clubs. I have worked with a wide variety of athletes, from 60+ year old master’s athletes qualifying for USAT Nationals to Elite Junior athletes preparing for the World Championship. On top of coaching, I am also a professional triathlete myself and apply my unique sports knowledge to help my athletes achieve their best. Having a deep understanding of both the science and the experiences around endurance sports, there little better for me than helping my athletes achieve what they never thought was possible.

The foundation of a productive coach-athlete relationship is good communication. It takes more than just blind training to achieve your goals, and a good coach has to take an athlete's life stress and fatigue into account, and adjust the training load accordingly. Thus I really like to get to know my athletes, so I encourage them to tell me about what's going on in their lives beyond the sport.

Both the athlete and coach need to have clearly set goals in order to measure success. Did we achieve your goals? And why or why not? Having a goal to shoot for, whether it be finishing your first race or going for a podium spot, is important for defining what athletic success means to you. Specific goals are also great motivators for athletes in order to get through tough moments in training when athletes just can't be bothered to go out and get the work done (we've all been there!). I even encourage all of my athletes to leave themselves sticky notes around the house as reminders for why they decided to start training in the first place!

In the last half decade, I have helped athletes to reach National and World Championship levels events in triathlon, trained cyclist to reach the top Category 1 level of cycling racing and coached runners to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Nothing makes me happier than helping athletes to achieve their goals!

** Please note that there is a 3 month minimum with all programs. This ensures that there is time to effect change in your training and racing performance. When signing up, in the quantity field, please choose 3 months or more. Monthly billing can be arranged but may include a $100 sign up fee.

Tier 1 Coaching Level : $175/month**

Just starting out? Not sure what to do but want to make sure you get started correctly and improve your performance? A Semi-Custom plan will help get you started correctly.

  • Fully periodized training plans that include base, speed, endurance, and strength programs.
  • Individually customized weekly coaching program & yearly long term plan (ATP)
  • Two phone or Skype calls per month.
  • Training Peaks account
  • Additional features will be added to your package after your consultation with your coach as programs need to be tailored to each athletes individuals needs

Tier 2 Coaching Level : $250/month**

You want to take your training to the next level and be competitive? One on one coach input with your training data and program structure: This is the program to take you there.

  • Fully periodized training plans that include base, speed, endurance, and strength programs
  • Individually customized weekly coaching program & yearly long term plan (ATP)
  • Four phone or Skype calls per month
  • Training Peaks account;
  • Monthly field-based testing and progress reporting
  • Nutritional guidance.
  • Exclusive discounts on Vanguard Endurance, and sponsor, products.
  • Additional features will be added to your package after your consultation with your coach as programs need to be tailored to each athletes individuals needs.

Tier 3 Coaching Level : $325/month**

You’re a seasoned veteran, or elite athlete, and you want it all. You're looking to qualify for Kona, Nationals, or Worlds. Or you compete as a top age grouper and are looking to go Pro.

  • Fully periodized training plans that include base, speed, endurance, and strength programs
  • Individually customized weekly coaching program & yearly long term plan (ATP)
  • One video analysis session per month
  • Full access to the Vanguard Endurance training specific webinar library
  • Training Peaks account
  • Guidance and input available from the Vanguard Endurance nutritionist.
  • Monthly testing and progress report;
  • Unlimited access to your coach via SKYPE or Phone;
  • Access to attend up to two Colorado springs 3-day camp/clinics free (accommodation and transportation not included);
  • Discounts up to 50% on Vanguard Endurance, and sponsor, products
  • Additional features will be added to your package after your consultation with your coach as programs need to be tailored to each athletes individuals needs.
